The Subscription Preferences and Topics feature allows users to choose which types of communications they want to receive. This ensures users stay updated on what matters most to them, while giving them control over their communication preferences.

What Are Subscription Topics?

Subscription topics represent categories of messages that users can subscribe or unsubscribe from — such as product updates, newsletters, or event announcements.

A list of default subscription topics is automatically created, but these can be customized at any time to better fit your communication needs.

Managing and Updating Topics

You can manage or update your subscription topics at any time by navigating to Settings → Subscription Topics on your account dashboard.

From this section, you can:

  • View all existing topics

  • Edit topic names and descriptions

  • Add new topics or remove unused ones

  • Mark topics as private (for mandatory or transactional communications)

Private Topics

Topics can be marked private. Private topics are used for transactional engagement (such as password resets or billing confirmations) and cannot be unsubscribed from by users.

Use this option only for essential system or account-related messages.

Sending Broadcasts by Topic

When creating a broadcast, you’ll need to select a subscription topic. Only users who are subscribed to that topic will receive the broadcast.

If a user has unsubscribed from the selected topic, the message will not be sent to them — ensuring compliance with user preferences.

Managing Subscriptions in Broadcasts

All broadcasts include a link for users to manage their subscription preferences.

To insert this link manually in your message, use the Liquid tag:

{{preference_url}}

This will generate a personalized link allowing users to update their subscriptions at any time.

Best Practices

  • Keep topic names clear and descriptive.

  • Use private topics only for essential, non-marketing communications.

  • Regularly review and update topics to ensure they align with your current communication strategy.
